to a new filmmaker…
Dear X,
Thanks for your email - It’s very flattering to think someone is inspired by me! I’m just doing what it seems like your doing - making films because I love it (and also because I’m rubbish at doing anything else!).
I know this might not be a helpful comment because I’m sure you’re aware it always feels like your swimming against the current. That’s just what this industry is like - it’s a tough one to live in which is why not a lot of people can “make it”. But even through your frustrations and difficulties you’re continuing to make films then your doing more than most. The amount of young filmmakers I speak to who aren’t actually getting off their backsides and making something (even though they want to work in the industry badly) is incredible.
I sense you’re like me - I have to be making something and furthering my talents and education as a director all of the time for myself because - let’s face it - no one else will help you but you! The more I think about it, the more I hate the terms “make it” and “big break”. No one is just lucky - it comes from hard work and determination which, it sounds, like you have.
My advice to you would be to keep at it. ‘You’re only as good as your last film’ they say… and it’s true. Keep making them and make the next better than the last. We’re all constantly learning from ourselves (geez, that sounded a little too deep!). But, make sure people see your work. Get them into festivals, screenings, short films nights etc - there are plenty in Manchester. Invite production companies along to see your work. Make a showreel and send it to everyone. It’s hard work making a film and it’s even harder getting it seen! You never know who will be in the audience who can offer you that first paid job… and it probably won’t be as a director but a runner - but then at least you’ve started on the ladder. I did the same. I hope that helps.
It’s always great to hear from new filmmakers.
Phil
